Louise "Sexy Sue" Edwards -- Original Antiguan Handicrafts
Profile
Handicrafter, Artisan
Louise “Sexy Sue” Edwards is the crafter of traditional Antiguan and Barbudan seedwork. Her repertoire includes original, artistic and inventive jewellery, accessories, and decor pieces. The seeds she uses come from the wild tamarind tree (as well as the jumbie bead vine) that grows abundantly on the island.
The seeds are boiled in rainwater, and then aired for a day; they are stored in a jar to preserve moisture. The seeds are strung individually with a needle and thread into the designs you see in the photo gallery. The pieces vary from waist-belts to bracelets, chokers, earrings, change purses, evening bags, and coasters.
Seed work is becoming a lost art, and it is Edwards’ hope that the younger generation will grow interest in learning this wonderful (if tedious) traditional handicraft.
