Kwame Delfish
Profile
Classical and digital painter, Creative director, Graphic Designer, Hair stylist, photography and motion creator.
Kwame Delfish, a classically trained painter, barber/hairstylist, and self-taught graphic artist, is a storyteller at heart. Born and raised in Toronto with Antigua & Barbuda and Montserrat roots, Kwame’s artistry, spanning diverse mediums, has created international impact, inspiring and establishing safe spaces. With a background rich in Caribbean heritage, nurtured through art and music programs, Kwame’s talents flourished at Sheridan College and OCAD.
Throughout his life, Kwame’s commitment to arts and culture manifested in diverse roles—designer, organist, drummer, and cultural advocate. His art has graced prestigious venues, including the Royal Ontario Museum and international exhibitions. As a professional barber/hairstylist, Kwame co-owned Hill Studio, redefining perceptions of Black hair and empowering individuals. He played a pivotal role in shaping Black hair culture in Toronto and volunteered as an instructor in the Toronto Ministry of Trades’ apprenticeship program.
In 2015, Kwame made history as the first Caribbean Canadian artist commissioned by the Royal Canadian Mint. His subsequent coin designs in 2022 and 2023, the latter honoring the No. 2 Construction Battalion, garnered national recognition, with the 2023 coin acknowledged in Prime Minister Trudeau’s public apology. Kwame’s visionary initiative, the “Blak Brush”, founded in 2020, seeks to redefine narratives and spaces for community healing through art expressions that amplify Black voices. As a sought-after workshop facilitator, consultant, and three-time Mint-commissioned artist, Kwame stands as a symbol of black excellence, featured on the 2023 Black History Month Legacy Poster.
The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority hosted its inaugural edition of Art Week in April 2023. This event featured an impressive lineup of sculptors, poets, painters, musicians, dancers and also provided a space for dialog and inspiration. Among the artists showcased was Kwame Delfish, who traveled from Toronto, Canada, to participate in this outstanding event, as a guest artist.
